    On Temporal Graph Exploration

    A temporal graph is a graph in which the edge set can change from step to step. The temporal graph exploration problem TEXP is the problem of computing a foremost exploration schedule for a temporal graph, i.e., a temporal walk that starts at a given start node, visits all nodes of the graph, and has the smallest arrival time. In the first part of the paper, we consider only temporal graphs that are connected at each step. For such temporal graphs with nn nodes, we show that it is NP-hard to approximate TEXP with ratio O(n1ϵ)O(n^{1-\epsilon}) for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0. We also provide an explicit construction of temporal graphs that require Θ(n2)\Theta(n^2) steps to be explored. We then consider TEXP under the assumption that the underlying graph (i.e. the graph that contains all edges that are present in the temporal graph in at least one step) belongs to a specific class of graphs. Among other results, we show that temporal graphs can be explored in O(n1.5k2logn)O(n^{1.5} k^2 \log n) steps if the underlying graph has treewidth kk and in O(nlog3n)O(n \log^3 n) steps if the underlying graph is a 2×n2\times n grid. In the second part of the paper, we replace the connectedness assumption by a weaker assumption and show that mm-edge temporal graphs with regularly present edges and with random edges can always be explored in O(m)O(m) steps and O(mlogn)O(m \log n) steps with high probability, respectively.     Feature fusion reveals slow and fast visual memories

    Although the visual system can achieve a coarse classification of its inputs in a relatively short time, the synthesis of qualia-rich and detailed percepts can take substantially more time. If these prolonged computations were to take place in a retinotopic space, moving objects would generate extensive smear. However, under normal viewing conditions, moving objects appear relatively sharp and clear, suggesting that a substantial part of visual short-term memory takes place at a nonretinotopic locus. By using a retinotopic feature fusion and a nonretinotopic feature attribution paradigm, we provide evidence for a relatively fast retinotopic buffer and a substantially slower nonretinotopic memory. We present a simple model that can account for the dynamics of these complementary memory processes. Taken together, our results indicate that the visual system can accomplish temporal integration of information while avoiding smear by breaking off sensory memory into fast and slow components that are implemented in retinotopic and nonretinotopic loci, respectively

    Decomposition pathways of 13C-depleted leaf litter in forest soils of the Swiss Jura

    Decomposition of leaf litter and its incorporation into the mineral soil are key components of the C cycle in forest soils. In a 13C tracer experiment, we quantified the pathways of C from decomposing leaf litter in calcareous soils of a mixed beech forest in the Swiss Jura. Moreover, we assessed how important the cold season is for the decomposition of freshly fallen leaves. The annual C loss from the litter layer of 69-77% resulted mainly from the C mineralization (29-34% of the initial litter C) and from the transfer of litter material to the deeper mineral soil (>4cm) by soil fauna (30%). Although only 4-5% of the initial litter C was leached as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), this pathway could be important for the C sequestration in soils in the long term: The DOC leached from the litter layer was mostly retained (95%) in the first 5cm of the mineral soil by both physico-chemical sorption and biodegradation and, thus, it might have contributed significantly to the litter-derived C recovered in the heavy fraction (>1.6gcm−3) at 0-4cm depth (4% of the initial litter C). About 80% of the annual DOC leaching from the litter layer occurred during the cold season (Nov-April) due to an initial DOC flush of water-soluble substances. In contrast, the litter mineralization in winter accounted for only 25% of the annual C losses through CO2 release from the labelled litter. Nevertheless, the highest contributions (45-60%) of litter decay to the heterotrophic soil respiration were observed on warm winter days when the mineral soil was still cold and the labile litter pool only partly mineralized. Our 13C tracing also revealed that: (1) the fresh litter C only marginally primed the mineralization of older SOM (>1year); and (2) non-litter C, such as throughfall DOC, contributed significantly to the C fluxes from the litter layer since the microbial biomass and the DOC leached from the litter layer contained 20-30% and up to 60% of unlabelled C, respectively. In summary, our study shows that significant amounts of recent leaf litter C (<1year) are incorporated into mineral soils and that the cold season is clearly less important for the litter turnover than the warm season in this beech forest ecosyste

    This report describes the complete design and testing of a methodology for the creation of a force sensing device that can be used to provide clinically significant data to aid a prosthetist in the static alignment of a transtibial prosthesis fitting. Thin-film force transducers form the basis for the prototype force sensing module that is integrated into a prosthetic leg for the testing and future alignment fittings. This physical force sensing device was used along with a computer simulation of the limb and module to collect force measurement results, both positionally relative and absolute. The experimental data collected were analyzed using Analysis of Variance, effects plots and prediction equations. The statistical analysis helped to evaluate the feasibility of using similar data and methods for producing a system capable of predicting and validating changes in force distribution relationship, the accuracy of the force sensing module could be improved. The recommendations for future revisions of this design include using more accurate force sensors and conducting more replications of the physical testing

    Toward ‘Cultures of Engagement’? An exploratory comparison of engagement patterns on Facebook news posts

    Information production, dissemination, and consumption are contingent upon cultural and financial dimensions. This study attempts to find cultures of engagement that reflect how audiences engage with news posts made by either commercial or state-owned news outlets on Facebook. To do so, we collected over a million news posts (n = 1,173,159) produced by 482 news outlets in three Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) and analyzed over 69 million interactions across three metrics of engagement (i.e. comments, likes, and shares). More concretely, we investigate whether the patterns of engagement follow distinct patterns across national boundaries and type of outlet ownership. While we are skeptical of metrics of engagement as markers of specific cultures of engagement, our results show that there are clear differences in how readers engage with news posts depending on the country of origin and whether they are fully state-owned or private-owned outlets.publishedVersio

    Phases of methodological research in biostatistics—Building the evidence base for new methods

    Although new biostatistical methods are published at a very high rate, many of these developments are not trustworthy enough to be adopted by the scientific community. We propose a framework to think about how a piece of methodological work contributes to the evidence base for a method. Similar to the well-known phases of clinical research in drug development, we propose to define four phases of methodological research. These four phases cover (I) proposing a new methodological idea while providing, for example, logical reasoning or proofs, (II) providing empirical evidence, first in a narrow target setting, then (III) in an extended range of settings and for various outcomes, accompanied by appropriate application examples, and (IV) investigations that establish a method as sufficiently well-understood to know when it is preferred over others and when it is not; that is, its pitfalls. We suggest basic definitions of the four phases to provoke thought and discussion rather than devising an unambiguous classification of studies into phases. Too many methodological developments finish before phase III/IV, but we give two examples with references. Our concept rebalances the emphasis to studies in phases III and IV, that is, carefully planned method comparison studies and studies that explore the empirical properties of existing methods in a wider range of problems

The inter­layer distance, including that between aligned N atoms from alternating cations and anions in adjacent layers, is exceptionally short at 3.055 (1) Å. Two-dimensional C—H⋯O hydrogen-bonded networks link cations to anions, while C—H⋯N inter­actions link cations within each layer. Anion–π inter­actions with the cations assist in binding the layers together
